People will say something to me, and I will over analyse it until I come up with an opinion that I believe to be true about something. As my teacher wrote on a card on the last day of school, to me of course: "Don't say more than what needs to be said." She's the only person to realise this in me, well, the only person to state that she realises this in me.Īlso, I spend too much time in my own head that people don't realise. Which is good in some cases and not others. I think in-depth about everything that comes to my head, but I only say out the things that I think people would like to hear. I just looks the same no matter how I feel. I'm so emotional, and I think people catch on to this, but recently I realised I don't show any emotions at all. When in reality you offered the same shitty, generic support they were getting from everyone else. You pictured yourself as traveling through the world as a beacon of support for all those in need, and everyone came to you for support or w/e. On a side note, maybe you had reverse spotlight effect. Not just a few word like "yeah that sounds like a good idea, I'm sure everything will go great for you", especially if you didn't mean it. You just became a support dispenser, rather than someone they could turn to when they needed genuine and legitimate support. Or maybe since you gave your support to so many people, instead of being selective with it, it became cheapened and people stopped appreciating it because they knew you would support them no matter what. Maybe they're all saying to each other now "what happened to yousmelllikearainbow, I used to be able to go talk to him about anything and he would support me, now he's just a cynical and apathetic asshole." I think people probably appreciated your support, but since it was part of your nature at the time, they thought that you were a steadfast support steed who didn't need "thanks" because it was in your nature. So Redditors, what are the best/worst things about yourself that you think people will notice but you discovered they never did? Original article a free PDF version and the The Spotlight effect on wikipedia “You’re an expert on yourself.” “That means you notice all kinds of subtle things about yourself that others simply don’t. The central problem is that you know yourself too well. Most of the time they won’t even register because they are too busy tending to their own ego. If you do or say something you think is especially clever or admirable, you’re likely to overestimate the extent to which other people will notice. Because, people assume that their emotional states are broadcast to all and sundry when in fact they are largely invisible. It also works the other way. As a result, we blow everything out of proportion. >!insert spoiler here!< Other subreddits you might like: someĪ great passage about the "spotlight effect":īecause we’re so aware of ourselves it can be easy to think that others are noticing us when they’re not.
